AviationOutlook Boeing 787 or 787 Dreamliner is a wide-body twin engine jet airliner manufactured by Boeing. One of the main design features of the Boeing 787 at the time was its increased use of advanced composite materials in several aircraft structures, its ultra-low fuel consumption, high efficiency, low pollutant emissions, and a comfortable cabin design.
Prior to the renaming in January 2005, the aircraft’s initial name was 7E7. The 787’s first appearance was at the launch ceremony of the Everett plant on July 8, 2007. The production of the 787 involves large-scale cooperation with many suppliers worldwide. The final assembly is carried out at the Boeing plant in Everett, Washington, and the Boeing South Carolina plant in North Charleston, South Carolina.
Originally planned to enter service in May 2008, the project experienced several delays. The airliner’s first flight was conducted on December 15, 2009, and flight testing was completed in mid-2011. According to reports, Boeing spent $32 billion on the 787 development program. The main competitors for the 787 Dreamliner are Airbus A350 and A330neo.
